11 Little Things I Inexplicably Hate Paying For
“I’m not cheap. If anything, I could use a 12-week seminar on how to be more frugal. (Which, ironically, I’d probably overpay to attend.)
In fact, I feel like I’ve worked my whole life to prove the stereotypes about my chosen people wrong — overtipping, overbuying, overgifting, overtabpickingup.
And still… there remain little, simple things I just hate paying for. I think everyone has a few of these, and they’re different person-to-person. For instance, I don’t really sweat gas prices and I won’t drive out of my way to save eight or ten cents a gallon (which, over the course of a fill, adds up to a whopping $1.40 or so in savings)… but I know people who drive three cities over to save that buck-forty.
So here are the 11 little things I just hate paying for.”Posted on July 3, 2009

Statue of Liberty Facts: July 4th Reopening and More
This Fourth of July visitors will once again be free to visit the Statue of Liberty’s crown for the first time since 9/11. The New York City landmark’s upper reaches are set to reopen after being closed for safety reasons after the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The move follows the reopening of Liberty Island in late 2001 and of the statue in 2004.Posted on July 3, 2009

India decriminalizes same-gender sex - Boing Boing
The Times of India is calling it “India’s Gay Day.” A ruling on Thursday overturned a colonial law nearly 150 years old that describes sex acts between two persons of the same gender as an “unnatural offense.”

The Associated Press: Rare copy of Declaration of Independence found
British researchers have announced the discovery of a rare original copy of America’s Declaration of Independence — just in time for the Fourth of July.
Katrina McClintock, a spokeswoman at the National Archives, said Thursday that a researcher accidentally discovered the “Dunlap print,” named after a printer, several months ago. The find was announced only after it could be properly catalogued.
Edward Hampshire, the National Archives’ specialist in colonial materials, said the find was “incredibly exciting.”
“It is likely that only around 200 of these were ever printed, so uncovering a new one nearly 250 years later is extremely rare, especially one in such good condition,” he said.
